❪ NADRIL. ❫

NADRIL

Far to the North at the edge of the El Nysan Isles, the mysterious colony of Nadril sits nestled into the tundra. Originally considered a useful location for the Olympian empire to expand its reach into, the area was abandoned long ago after being deemed too treacherous for settling. Years later, small groups of natives from Olympia and Wyver tired of the bustle and politics of city life and moved north, to live simply and let the ice shelter them from the dangers surrounding the hamlet that would one day become Nadril. Significantly more of the populace is made of refugees and their descendants — those from other worlds who found their way to the Nadril and made a city of strangers in a strange land. In Olympia and Wyver not much is known about Nadril, officially; the efforts to settle the area are talked about as a fumble and the quest to move up north a fool’s errand, but every now and then someone will arrive in Olympia claiming to have come from the north… Someone is living up there, and by the few accounts that arrive, they are living well.

The people of Nadril live mostly by one rule: if you’re going to stay, you’re going to help. Here in the frozen north there’s no time for layabouts or wasted resources, and while the lifestyle is harsh, it’s a good life overall. People are more inclined to work together for the benefit of everybody, and everyone has a skill to contribute somehow, even if it’s something as simple as sanitation. Somebody has to clean up, after all. Overall the people of Nadril are tough but peaceful, as internal conflict in the unforgiving environment they live in doesn’t end well for anybody. If you stay, you help, or you’ll be asked politely to go back to the big cities.

The colony of Nadril is carved out of the ice and rock, and the people who live there are as sturdy as the land they’ve made their living out of. The colony is sprawling but sparse, with smaller clusters of homes radiating out from a solid center hub, where the remains of an old Natha refugee drop ship sits half-embedded in the earth. Touches of Natha technology can be found all around Nadril, its influence heaviest seen and felt in the center and less so as one approaches the outskirts. Many people in Nadril do not use Natha technology as part of their daily lives at all, but this is only a personal preference, and Nadril boasts a much more advanced tech level than anywhere else on El Nysa. The technology is old and worn compared to what you’ve seen on Thesa Station, but it’s definitely of Natha make. Around the colony you can find large satellites, all of which are operational. If asked, the people will tell you frankly that these satellites are the things that let Nadril live quietly and undisturbed.

While the colony is not physically divided between those who utilize technology and those who live off the land, touches of both lifestyles can be felt all around the settlement. Besides the central hub, you may find yourself in the Fishing District, residential areas, trading centers both above and below ground, and in the cave systems there is an underground lake and cave gardens to explore. Not too far from the edge of the colony, Magda’s tower home sits perched on a cliffside.

THE CENTRAL HUB

The crashed Natha ship at the heart of Nadril, dubbed Central by the people, is the hub of activity and technology in the colony. It is quite literally a drop ship sitting in the ground, placed there intentionally in a massive pit that keeps it from being buffeted by the northern storms. Inside it still looks very much like a ship, but old and worn, and with many rooms stripped of their original purpose to suit new ones. The mess hall, entertainment lounges, and sleeping quarters remain intact, but most other rooms have been converted to things such as indoor gardens, research labs, and technology repair stations. Newcomers are welcome to spend some time in the sleeping quarters here, but it’s far from a permanent living space. Besides the research labs, Central is open to the public. In the half of the ship that sits underground, its hull has been purposely breached to make pathways leading to other parts of the Nadril caves.

THE FISHING DISTRICT

Nadril’s Fishing District is a misnomer, if only because they do plenty more than fishing in this pocket of the city. Most, but not all of those residents who turn away from the more advanced technologies live and work here, where you can find ice fishing areas, boating docks, butcheries, several rustic shops and homes, and interestingly enough, what appears to be a small outdoor sports stadium. The “stadium” consists of the frozen surface of a lake and has only one side available for “seating,” where rough benches have been carved into a cliff face that doubles as shelter from wind and storms while outdoors. Nadril has three (3) “unique sports” and the people are quite fond of them, but if you ask, they all seem to be variations on ice hockey, one with a high-tech twist… Skating is also welcome here. The Fishing District is regarded as the rougher part of the colony, but not for any reason beyond they choose to embrace the full harshness of northern life; the people may be rougher around the edges, but they’re still valued members of Nadril society.

RESIDENTIAL AREAS & TRADING CENTERS

Both above and below ground there are centers for trading and pockets of small neighborhoods. On the surface, homes are made of stone and sometimes ice, as sturdy wood is a rare and precious resource out here. The rare lopsided home made of scavenged Natha drop pods can also be seen around. Their trading centers focus on large game and other materials too big to be brought into the caves whole; most of the meat consumed by Nadril is treated and traded up here. Weapons and ammunition of various types are also traded here. In the caves, homes are part of the rock, although they are well-carved, spacious, and comfortable. Many homes use modified pieces of Natha technology as paneling, either for light, heat, or just decoration. The caves’ “halls” are well-lit by simple lamps, and besides the lack of windows, it’s easy to forget one is living underground. Trading centers belowground focus on fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and other foods such as breads that cannot be reliably stored in the cold on the surface. The cave trading centers also offer items made by craftsmen such as clothes, paper, and so on.

THE CAVES

The cave system below Nadril is a comfortable place to live. It’s kept this way by modified and refurbished Natha technology that provides heat and light enough not only to escape the cold, but to raise plants and even a few small animals that provide food sources like milk and eggs. Throughout the caves, large rooms hollowed out to contain gardens can be found where Nadril grows its produce. Much deeper in the caves is an underground lake that stretches the vast expanse of the cavernous chamber it sits in. Strangely enough, the people don’t use this lake as their water source; when asked, they will speak of the lake as something to be careful about. The water’s surface seems eerily still, but look long enough and you might see something ripple far out in the center. As much as the lake’s cavern is silent as the grave, there’s definitely something living in it.
THE OUTER TOWER

On the outskirts of Nadril is a communications tower, cobbled together from a Natha ship's spire and several spidery, branching arrays. This is where Magda makes his home, monitoring Nadril's technological protections, the extent of the Natha’s influence, and running his own personal projects for El Nysa’s technological advancement. It is isolated, filled with research labs and relics of the past refugees who have come to El Nysa. The tower contains a record of the past groups of refugees who have made their way to Nadril in the form of photos lining its walls, bearing the images of long-lost planets and alien families. Each group of photos gradually shrinks in size, and the most recent seems to be from half a century ago.

SUBWAY STATION

A decent hike away from the colony, off the opposite end as Magda’s home, a fully constructed subway station can be found in the snow. This station is a relic of Olympia’s first effort to extend their empire into this area, and while the station is sound and the tracks underground look sturdy, it was clearly abandoned by the Olympians before becoming operational. The station is currently buried in snowdrifts and frozen over. There is also no power source down here, despite other technology ready and waiting for it.
